Project Successes
Kingfisher Urban Ecology and Wetlands has delivered a wide range of ecological projects across urban, riparian, and wetland environments. Selected examples are provided below to demonstrate our capability in ecological planning, design, restoration, and community engagement.
Penrhyn Estuary Rehabilitation – Port Botany Expansion
(Sydney Ports Corporation)
In collaboration with Dragonfly Environmental, Kingfisher contributed to the rehabilitation of Penrhyn Estuary as
part of the Port Botany Expansion project. This involved the creation and expansion of saltmarsh habitat and the establishment of a functional estuarine ecosystem. The
project was recognised with the Australian Construction Achievement Award, highlighting its success in delivering
large-scale ecological outcomes within a major infrastructure project.
Wangal Park – Integrated Stormwater and Ecology
Design (Burwood Council)
Kingfisher contributed to the award-winning Wangal Park project, which received recognition for Excellence in Integrated Stormwater Design. Working within a multidisciplinary team, the project demonstrated how Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) can enhance both ecological outcomes and community amenity,
integrating stormwater management with habitat creation and public open space.
Riparian Lands Planning and Waterway Assessment
(NSW DPI Water)
Kingfisher prepared staged Riparian Lands Plans to support development planning and regulatory approvals. The work included defining riparian corridors, assessing offset requirements, and coordinating with NSW DPI Water to achieve in-principle and final approvals. This project demonstrates our ability to navigate complex regulatory frameworks while delivering practical ecological outcomes.
Mona Vale Golf Course – Wetland and Bushland
Management Planning
Kingfisher undertook detailed assessment and management planning for wetlands, waterways, and bushland areas within Mona Vale Golf Course. The project addressed a wide range of site conditions, from degraded creeklines dominated by exotic species to higher-quality native vegetation systems. The resulting plan provided targeted management recommendations supported by case studies and best-practice approaches.
Sydney Park Interface – Urban Ecology Design
Integration (City of Sydney)
Kingfisher provided ecological input into the redevelopment of land adjoining Sydney Park, focusing on integrating urban design with biodiversity outcomes.
This included guidance on habitat creation, green roof opportunities, and urban ecology features to support native species such as bees and butterflies. The project
demonstrates our ability to embed ecological outcomes within highly urbanised environments.
Living Mosman Program – Community Engagement
and Biodiversity Education
Kingfisher designed and delivered a series of community workshops and field-based programs aimed at enhancing local biodiversity awareness and
participation. The program included guided walks, ecological workshops, and hands-on learning experiences, including microbat monitoring and habitat
creation. This work highlights our strength in community engagement and education as part of ecological project delivery
Wolli Creek Shore Development – Long-Term Ecological
Implementation (Frasers Group)
Kingfisher has been involved in the Wolli Creek Shore Development for over six years, providing ecological input from concept design through to implementation
and final sign-off. Works included riparian zone design, vegetation management, saltmarsh and mangrove protection and expansion, and aquatic sediment
management. This project demonstrates our ability to deliver long-term, integrated ecological outcomes within urban development projects.
Eco-Engineering Coastal Trial – Oyster Reef Habitat
Creation (Oceanwatch Australia)
Kingfisher prepared an Ecological Risk Assessment for the use of oyster shell-filled coir bags for erosion control and habitat creation along Sydney’s foreshore. The
project involved collaboration with research institutions and community groups, supporting innovation in coastal resilience and habitat restoration. This work
demonstrates our capability in emerging ecological techniques and research-driven projects.
Ballast Point Park – Urban Ecology Strategy
(Placemaking NSW)
Kingfisher provided urban ecology advice and strategic direction for Ballast Point Park, focusing on integrating biodiversity within a highly urbanised public space. The project established a clear ecological vision, identified habitat opportunities for native fauna, and balanced ecological outcomes with recreation and community use. This project demonstrates Kingfisher’s ability to deliver practical, place-based urban ecology solutions that integrate biodiversity into design and long-term park
management.
Review of Environmental Factors – Hazard Reduction
Burn, Hunts Creek Reserve (City of Parramatta Council)
Kingfisher prepared a Review of Environmental Factors (REF) to support a controlled hazard reduction burn within Hunts Creek Reserve under Part 5 of the EP&A
Act. The assessment balanced bushfire risk reduction with ecological protection, including targeted mitigation for threatened species and consideration of fire regime, habitat values, and potential environmental impacts. This project highlights Kingfisher’s expertise in fireecology and delivering robust Part 5 environmental assessments in urban bushland settings.
